Google AdSense is a very complex tool, and I am nowhere near an expert, but I have picked up some great tips along the way. Hopefully, my small amount of knowledge on the subject will help someone out there.
When placing your Google AdSense ads on your page, in most cases, you want them to blend in and look like part of the blog content. This is actually referred to as “optimizing your color palettes.” Nothing screams “advertisement!” more than an ad slapped on a page in a contrasting color and style.
Take some time and format your ads to match your blog, especially if they are at the top or in the sidebar above the fold. (The fold is where the screen stops and the reader has to scroll down to read more.) Here is an example using my eBay Coach blog. This is an ad unit across the top:
See the small clickable text links below the title box? That is an ad. It looks like content, right? The background color is exactly the same, there is no border, and the text color is exactly the same as the text on the blog. Click here for a closer look.
Is this cheating? Absolutely not. Google encourages this. Click here for an article right on the Google AdSense support site about this topic. Blending the ads doesn’t work for every site, so other strategies also include complementing and contrasting your ads. This is also explained in the above article.
